[배드민턴코리아] '근성남' 손완호(김천시청 세계13위)가 끈질기게 살아 남아 결국 올림픽 본선 무대를 밟는다.(랭킹=올림픽랭킹포인트 기준)
손완호는 31일 런던 웸블리 아레나에서 진행된 2012런던올림픽 배드민턴 남자단식 H조 예선 두 번째 경기에서 수젠하오(대만 세계19위)를 2-0(21-14 21-10)으로 눌렀다.
이로써 손완호는 2승, H조 1위로 당당히 본선행을 확정했다. 대표팀 선배 이현일(요넥스 세계7위)과 나란히 16강에 이름을 올렸다.
이날 손완호는 경기 직후 "경기는 전반적으로 잘된 것 같고, 일단 초기 목표는 달성했어요"라고 말했다.
손완호의 다음 목표는 피터게이드(덴마크 세계5위)다. 16강전에서 맞붙는다.
상대전적 1승 6패. 쉽지 않은 상대다. 그러나 1승이 가장 최근 경기였다는 점에서 기대를 가져볼만 하다.
노장인 피터게이드(37)는 최근 체력적인 문제를 자주 드러내고 있다. 반면 손완호는 상대가 질릴 때까지 물고 늘어지는 스타일. 안정적인 수비와 지치지 않는 체력을 바탕으로 끈질기게 상대를 괴롭힌다.
손완호는 "내일은 그냥 편하게 해야죠"라며 웃었다. 그러나 "피터랑 마지막 대결일 것 같은데 이기고 싶어요(피터게이드의 나이가 있기 때문에)"라고 속내도 내비쳤다. "지난번처럼 뛸 생각이에요"라고 덧붙였다.
손완호는 우여곡절 끝에 이번 올림픽 티켓을 챙겼다. 런던올림픽 출전권이 걸린 마지막 대회, 지난 4월 말 열렸던 2012인디아오픈 결승전에서 리총웨이(세계랭킹 1위)를 꺾는 파란을 일으켰다. 17위였던 세계랭킹을 단숨에 13위로 급상승시키며 극적으로 런던행에 합류했다.
당시 손완호의 8강전 상대가 바로 피터게이드였다.
